VICE PRESIDENT TO HERBERT HOOVER / #31

  • 3/8 Kaw, Osage, and Potawatomi Indian and the sole person with significant Native American ancestry to hold executive office in the country.

  • Born in the Kansas territory, one year prior to statehood.

  • Grew up on a reservation.

  • Spoke Kaw and French.

  • Though he was an accomplished jockey, his grandmothers pushed him to do other things. He ended up studying law. You know what? Just go ahead and read National Park Service’s post about him. He’s fascinating. And not without fault.

  • Hoover and Curtis were not fans of each other, but Curtis could bring in farmers’ votes so there you go.

Doodle inspired by Kurt Deion’s book Presidential Grave Hunter: One Kid’s Quest to Visit the Tombs of Every President and Vice President, with some supporting facts sprinkled in from National Park Service.

Heather Rogers, America's Preeminent Presidential Doodler

Heather isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler by one of her favorite authors and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.
