I’m a Bookshop affiliate: here’s why you should care

I’ve been a Bookshop affiliate for a while, but haven’t explained or promoted it much assuming everyone knows about Bookshop. Turns out, they don’t! With the holidays approaching, here’s a subtle reminder to shop small when and if you can.

Why I ♥️ Bookshop
(and why maybe you should, too)

It’s an easy way to support my project

If you’re into what I’m doing here and are already buying books, buying through my shop would mean I earn a small commission on each purchase. That could help offset the cost of my website, newsletter, weird little fun mailings, art supplies, etc. Just click in through my “shop” to get started.

Buy any book, not just the books I’ve shared, and it counts!

I’ve shared some pretty damned good books though (like these books I’m always trying to get everyone to read). Bookshop has tons of titles (eBooks, too). See for yourself:

I’m not saying that Theodore Roosevelt would want you to buy through Bookshop

But I’m not not saying that.

Listen, he loved the Amazon. We all know that. And if you don’t, read this incredible book:

But would he love the other Amazon? I’m guessing not. Roosevelt was extremely alarmed by the “rush toward industrial monopoly.” I’m sure he’d have some things to say about where we are today.

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, by Edmund Morris; I had some beefs with this one but still loved reading and doodling my way through it.

This feels like someone who would want you to shop small, don’t you think?

But also
(other reasons I
♥️ Bookshop)

To-date, I think the only people who have purchased through my Bookshop are me and my best friend. In the spirit of transparency, you should know that I only just recently bothered to connect my shop to method of retrieving the commissions.

Nevertheless, Bookshop has allowed me to:

Track what I read each year

I love seeing the titles stack up.

Support my bibliography

The books listed in my bibliography can be found in my Bookshop. You can click into any title to get more info or to make a purchase (if you were so inclined).

Pull titles into blog posts and my website

Effortlessly create gift guides

Which I can then pull into my wish list for Santa more all-encompassing gift guides on my website:

And not only that!

Bookshop is Climate Neutral certified by the Change Climate Project

A few closing doodles to consider

The three doodles above were inspired by the very sobering The Age of Acquiescence: The Life and Death of American Resistance to Organized Wealth and Power, by Steve Fraser (more doodles here)

Wrap-up posts

Not to brag, but I’ve read some pretty incredible books:

Heather Rogers, America's Preeminent Presidential Doodler

Heather isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler by one of her favorite authors and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.
