I’m ready, Fern! ❄

Correct me if I’m wrong — some of these titles could be strung together to form a non-wintery poem…?

Mornings on horseback
Skinny dip
Into the water…
Revolutionary summer

In any case, here are my 7 new books:

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York
Robert A. Caro

It took several episodes of The 99% Invisible Breakdown: The Power Broker (it’s so freaking good!!) AND a reference to Robert Moses while reading about Lady Bird to make me wonder if I should read it. My friend Lisa mentioning reading it together and my friend Amy going to the book sale early and scoring me a copy…? Well, I clearly have no choice now.

The Lincoln Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill America's 16th Presidentand Why It Failed
Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch

It was a delight to doodle my way through their book about the conspiracy to kill George Washington — it’s where I first learned of General Charles Lee! Their book about the conspiracy to kill FDR, Stalin, and Churchill has been patiently waiting on my shelf for a while. Now it has a friend.

Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom
David W. Blight

Not gonna lie — I didn’t even read the description. The cover is striking and Douglass is fascinating.

Into the Water
Paula Hawkins

This’ll be a quick keep-me-up-too-late-at-night read.

Skinny Dip
Carl Hiaasen

Just finished reading one of his books this morning. Saw his name on a spine and started reading the summary and realized it’s the book I just finished. (I’m bad with titles! I remember covers and in my defense, the version had a different cover.) In any case — he wrote Bad Monkey and I loooove that show.

Mornings on Horseback: The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life and the Unique Child Who Became Theodore Roosevelt
David McCullough

As if I need to read another book about Theodore Roosevelt. But, David McCullough… sooooo adding it to my pile.

NOTE: the ✔️indicates that I’ve read the book. Which is none of them, because givemeafreakingminute.

PS If you’d rather hear about books that I actually did read, here are a few:

PPS Here’s my collection of library book sale hauls, past and present.

Heather Rogers, America's Preeminent Presidential Doodler

Heather isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler by one of her favorite authors and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.
