ISSUE NO. 47 // WE NEED THEE

I lied to you.

No George

We were going to focus on George Washington today, but I changed my mind. I’m talking about him for 45 whole minutes on January 9 at 10:30 a.m. EST though! Register here (for free) if you want to join.*

Yes Theodore

I just wrapped up a book about the women in Theodore Roosevelt’s life so instead we’re talking about why I wish Theodore was here.

This by no means undermines my declaration that he was a mustachioed manchild. In fact, I added another proof point:

Thank you for being here. I wish you and yours a healthy and joyous holiday season!

Presidential Doodler

*If 10:30 a.m. on a Friday doesn’t work for you, these sessions will be recorded and available to watch at your leisure. The virtual webinar series is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library and is in collaboration with a multitude of MA and NH libraries and it’s going to be a lot of fun.

PS Hey, did you know I’m a Bookshop affiliate? When you buy books online, consider ordering through my shop to support my project. I can’t speak for him, but I’m pretty sure Theodore would want you to shop small.

A few surprising things about Theodore Roosevelt that make me wish he were here

doodle of dead bird

He sometimes carried dead birds and whatnot in his pocket.

For science! The little carcasses… eh, I could do without them. But recognizing the value of science and research?! Can’t take that for granted these days.

He unleashed ICE on NYC… but, like, in a good way.

An evil ice baron gobbling up smaller ice businesses into a monstrous company while a deadly heatwave strikes was no match for NYC Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt. (See #10 for details)

He was a class traitor.

He busted the crap out of some trusts. And he was alarmed by the “rush toward industrial monopoly.”

He said this:

“Americans faced a war ‘between the men who possess more than they earned and the men who have earned more than they possessed.’”

I would have voted for him.

I’ve spent a lot of time rolling my eyes at him for turning on his hand-picked successor and basically putting Woodrow Wilson into office when his third party split the vote. I wouldn’t really have voted for him in 1912, but only because I wouldn’t have been allowed to. I agree with much of his platform, which included women’s suffrage and campaign contribution limitations.

FOR MORE

I tried to keep this short and sweet, but for more about Theodore check out these two posts:

Heather Rogers, America's Preeminent Presidential Doodler

Heather isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler by one of her favorite authors and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.
